The Sunshine Vitamin

By Greg Arnold, DC, CSCS, September 24, 2007, abstracted from "Can Vitamin D Reduce Total Mortality?" in the September 10, 2007 issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine

Known as the "sunshine vitamin," vitamin D has been found known primarily for bone health. But vitamin D has also proven valuable in other areas of health, including helping maintain healthy blood sugar levels and strengthening immune systems in the elderly. Now a new study has found that vitamin D's health benefits may be extremely far-reaching and apply to all areas of health.

In the study, researchers examined 18 different clinical trials examining vitamin D's role in total mortality with doses that ranged from 400 to 800 IU per day and average 528 IU per day. What they found was remarkable in that those assigned to supplement with vitamin D had a statistically significant 7% reduction in mortality from any cause. This reduction was actually increased to 8% when the study lasted at least 3 years and was also 8% for those studies that compared vitamin D supplementation to a placebo control group.

When attempting to explain why vitamin D has such expansive health benefits, the researchers cite that through evolution, vitamin D has become integrated into many cellular functions and has been shown to be critical for immunity.

All of these results led the researchers to conclude that a more proactive attitude to identify, prevent, and treat vitamin D deficiency should be part of standard medical care.

Healthy Motivation

By Maryann Sickels
Certified Fitness Trainer

How do YOU define health? Stop and really think about the question. What is health to you as an individual? Not what is health to the guy down the street, or the author of the latest diet book, or the trainer typing these words. YOU: what does health look like in your life? Could you describe it in detail if someone were to approach you and ask? Would you reply with the common answer of diet and exercise or does it go deeper than that? Health involves more than just our physical bodies. Our minds, spirits and relationships are a part of our overall health along with other areas of life.

Everyday we are inundated with the ideas and opinions of others trying to sell us on their healthy life practices. With all the busyness that life brings we seldom have the time to truly investigate what lies beneath all the clever marketing. There are hundreds of products and systems promising to deliver the fastest results and in our desperation for improving our lives we easily buy into it. We try it for a while and find the program is unrealistic in the long run and before we know it we're back to our old habits. I'm sorry, but there are no magic bullets out there. There are definitely quality programs and products; the challenge is finding which ones are right for you.

Start by answering the above questions Take a health inventory of your life and see if you're satisfied with what you find. Pick an area that you feel ready to improve and start there. No more waiting for the right time, it's now, make a choice. I am by no means asking you to do a complete overhaul on your life. It could be as simple as adding a multivitamin or going for coffee with a friend. Maybe you've been putting off joining the local gym or making a mends in a strained relationship. You know your situation and you know where you can make improvements.

Once you've identified the areas you're going to work on, do some research. Try not to buy into the first thing that comes along. Thoughtfully consider the information and make a sound decision. Learn to take your time but not fall into complacency or laziness. There will be some trial and error and you may find something that works for a season and then it's time for something new. The important thing is that you don't give up.
